AS PAINTBALL'S POPULARITY GROWS, SO DOES ITS REVENUE.

TAMPA — At just over four feet and weighing in at 100 pounds, 14-year-old Andrew Haber isn't quite the right size for football and has no interest in baseball.
But Haber is smitten with a sport that's fast paced and action packed. He sports a uniform that looks like a motocross outfit, totes a $1,500 "gun" equipped with an electronic eye and feels a rush that he says no other sport offers.
The Tampa youth is a paintball fanatic. And it is fanatics like him who are turning a once-offbeat pastime into a fast-growing sport, complete with tournaments and prize money.
As a result, the businesses that support the sport — from wide-open outdoor areas where the game is played, to shops selling paintball equipment and outfits — is exploding.
The sport — or hobby, depending on your point of view — has grown into a $2 billion-a-year industry. With more than 7 million participants, it is the nation's third most-! popular "Extreme" sport behind in-line skating and skateboarding.
